My 11-year-old son is going through the infamous F.L.A.S.H. (Family Life And Sexual Heath) unit right now in school. Everything was going pretty well until they wrapped-up F.L. and then moved on to the A.S.H. segment. I’d prepped him for this day a few weeks ago, but he was still pretty traumatized by the sudden shift of topics. I know I’m getting old, but I’m simply not convinced that 5th graders are ready for so much detailed information. I certainly never had any formal education like this when I was his age. Instead, I had to slowly piece all of the facts together myself, just like Nature intended, by watching years of late-night television and studying crudely drawn pictures of the human anatomy* etched onto the walls of public restrooms. Simpler times, I guess.
